Hailed by several critics as the first great French horror film this millennium, Inside opens on a gory note and stays true to the bloodfest throughout. But rather than using splatter-gore for comedic effect, Hershell Gordon-Lewis, this duo timed their gore to build tragic suspense, scene after disgusting scene. The strength of Inside’s plot is its simplicity – pregnant photojournalist, Sarah Scaragato (Alysson Paradis), has just lost her husband in a fatal car accident and is in recovery when her baby is due on Christmas Eve, in fact. This is definitely one of my favorite war movies of all time! What an amazing movie, two superior snipers control the battle of a city. Intensely crafted – An extraordinary work of raw skill and imagination. Director Jean-Jacques Annaud captures this madness with urgent authenticity, creating a massive context for a more intimate battle waged amid the city’s ruins.
Like Saving Private Ryan, Enemy at the Gates opens with a pivotal event of World War II – the German invasion of Stalingrad–re-created in a grand epic scale, as Russian soldiers face German attack or punitive execution if they flee from the enemy’s advance. An intense cat-and-mouse game between a Russian shepherd raised to iconic fame and a German marksman whose skill is unmatched in its lethal precision. Vassily Zaitzev has been sniping Nazis one bullet at a time, while the German Major Konig has been assigned to kill Vassily and spare Hitler from further embarrassment.
Pornography or Art Film? The movie contains many of the same powerful ingredients: graphic nudity and explicit sexual behavior – It demands that the viewer suspend that response, look beyond any arousal or outrage generated from the explicit sexuality and focus on the relationships in the film.
Ken Park focuses on several teenagers and their tormented home lives. Shawn seems to be the most conventional. Tate is brimming with psychotic rage; Claude is habitually harassed by his brutish father and coddled, rather uncomfortably, by his enormously pregnant mother. Peaches looks after her devoutly religious father, but yearns for freedom. They’re all rather tight, or so they claim. But they spend precious little time together and none of them seems to know much about one another’s family lives. This bizarre dichotomy underscores their alienation # the result of suburban ennui, a teenager’s inherent sense of melodrama, and the disturbing nature of their home environments.
