Hunger Whiteness and Religion

Exploring why food aid exists and the deeper causes of food poverty, this book addresses neglected dimensions of traditional food aid and food poverty debates. It argues that the food aid industry is infused with neoliberal governmentality and shows how food charity upholds Christian ideals and white privilege, maintaining inequalities of class, race, religion and gender. However, it also reveals a sector that is immensely varied, embodying both individualism and mutual aid. Drawing upon lived experiences, it documents how food sharing amid poverty fosters solidarity and gives rise to alternative modes of food redistribution among communities. By harnessing these alternative ways of being, food aid and communities can be part of movements for economic and racial justice.

Intelligent Sensing and Communications

Intelligent Sensing and Communications for Internet of Everything introduces three application scenarios of enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), large-scale machine connection (mMTC) and ultra reliable low latency communication (URLLC). A new communication model, namely backscatter communication (BackCom), intelligent reflector surface (IRS) and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology in Internet of Everything (IoE), is described in detail. Also focusing on millimeter wave, the book discusses the potential application of terahertz 6G network spectrum in the Internet of Things (IoT). Finally, the applications of IoE network in big data, artificial intelligence (AI) technology and fog/edge computing technology are proposed.

Systematically introduces the technical standards and market analysis of 5G’s three application scenarios, as well as the problems and challenges faced
Provides readers with the knowledge of spectrum energy efficiency and cost-effective IoE network solutions
Introduces the application of physical layer related technologies to the IoT, such as BackCom, IRS and UAV relay in IoE, and millimeter wave technology
Discusses the potential application of terahertz 6G network spectrum in the IoT

misfits

Though they wear the orange jumpsuits associated with community service, there’s more to the trash-talking juvenile offenders of the BBC’s Misfits than meets the eye. While on their first job, lightning strikes the gang, and four of the delinquents find they’ve developed superpowers, making them a cross between The Breakfast Club and The X-Men. Slang-spouting Kelly can read minds, socially inept Simon can turn invisible, track star Curtis (Nathan Stewart-Jarrett) can reverse time, and self-obsessed Alisha becomes sexually irresistible. Irish loudmouth Nathan, however, appears to have gotten away power-free, and when his mom kicks him out of the house, he sleeps at the community center after hours. Unfortunately, the meteorological phenomenon also transforms their probation worker, Tony, into a raving loony, so they put a stop to his rampage, hide the evidence, and return to work under the watchful eye of Sally (Alex Reid), his replacement. Though they were acting in self-defense, they doubt anyone will believe their story.

Islands and the British Empire

Islands are not just geographical units or physical facts; their importance and significance arise from the human activities associated with them. The maritime routes of sailing ships, the victualling requirements of their sailors, and the strategic demands of seaborne empires in the age of
sail – as well as their intrinsic value as sources of rare commodities – meant that islands across the globe played prominent parts in imperial consolidation and expansion. This volume examines the various ways in which islands (and groups of islands) contributed to the establishment, extension, and
maintenance of the British Empire in the age of sail. Thematically related chapters explore the geographical, topographical, economic, and social diversity of the islands that comprised a large component of the British Empire in an era of rapid and significant expansion.

Although many of these islands were isolated rocky outcrops, they acted as crucial nodal points, providing critical assistance for ships and men embarked on the long-distance voyages that characterised British overseas activities in the period. Intercontinental maritime trade, colonial settlement,
and scientific exploration and experimentation would have been impossible without these oceanic islands. They also acted as sites of strategic competition, contestation, and conflict for rival European powers keen to outstrip each other in developing and maintaining overseas markets, plantations,
and settlements.

The importance of islands outstripped their physical size, the populations they sustained, or their individual economic contribution to the imperial balance sheet. Standing at the centre of maritime routes of global connectivity, islands offer historians of the British Empire fresh perspectives on
the intercontinental communication, commercial connections, and territorial expansion that characterised that empire.

The Notochord

Although it is the defining organ of Chordates, the notochord is perhaps the least understood of vertebrate organs because it is usually considered a transient structure only present in early embryonic development. Most tetrapods replace the notochord with cartilaginous or bony vertebral bodies and remnants of the notochord persist as intra- or intervertebral spaces and intervertebral discs. The presence of cartilage in the notochord of some tetrapods raises further important questions on the evolutionary relationships between notochordal cells and cartilage cells. This book explores these patterns of relationships between the notochord and vertebral axial chondrogenesis.

Project Management for Mining

Before You Put the First Shovel in the Ground–This Book Could Be the Difference Between a Successful Mining Operation and a Money Pit.

Opening a successful new mine is a vastly complex undertaking, entailing several years and millions to billions of dollars. In today’s world, when environmental and labor policies, regulatory compliance, and the impact of the community must be factored in, you cannot afford to make a mistake.

The Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration has created this road map for you. Written by two hands-on, in-the-trenches mining project managers with decades of experience bringing some of the world’s most successful, profitable mines into operation on time, within budget, and ethically, Project Management for Mining gives you step-by-step instructions in every process you are likely to encounter.

It is in use as course material in universities in Australia, Canada, Colombia, Ghana, Iran, Kazakhstan, Peru, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, the United Kingdom, as well as the United States. In addition, more than 100 different mining companies have sent employees to attend seminars conducted by authors Robin Hickson and Terry Owen, sessions all based around the material within this book.

In the years following the first edition, the authors gratefully received a bevy of excellent suggestions from some 2,000 readers in over 50 countries. This helpful reader feedback, coupled with written evaluations from the more than 400 seminar attendees, has been an unparalleled source of improvement for this new book.

This second edition is a significant accomplishment that includes 5 new chapters, substantial updates to the original 34 chapters, and 56 new or updated figures, flowcharts, and checklists that every project manager can use.
