Contemporary French Environmental

Contemporary French Environmental Thought in the Post-COVID-19 Era is focused on the fields of biosemiotics, linguistics, ecocriticism, and environmental ethics. Closely aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 13.1, Keith Moser’s study aims to strengthen resilience to climate-related hazards by drawing on ecological theories developed by French philosophers in conversation with biosemiotic principles. Not only does the novel theoretical framework offered by biosemiotic interpretations of the universe and our place in it represent an indispensable conceptual tool for understanding the unprecedented medical challenges at the dawn of a new millennium, but it also beckons us to think harder about the environmental crisis that threatens the continued existence of all sentient beings who call the biosphere home. This book also highlights the richness, diversity, and utility of the ecological theories developed by the French philosophers Michel Serres, Edgar Morin, Jacques Derrida, Dominique Lestel, and Michel Onfray in addition to how they engage with biosemiotic principles. Taken together, the book probes the scientific, linguistic, philosophical, and ethical implications of biosemiotic theories in a post-pandemic world from an environmental and medical perspective.

A Concise Introduction to Algebraic Varieties

A Concise Introduction to Algebraic Varieties is designed for a one-term introductory course on algebraic varieties over an algebraically closed field, and it provides a solid basis for a course on schemes and cohomology or on specialized topics, such as toric varieties and moduli spaces of curves. The book balances generality and accessibility by presenting local and global concepts, such as nonsingularity, normality, and completeness using the language of atlases, an approach that is most commonly associated with differential topology. The book concludes with a discussion of the Riemann-Roch theorem, the Brill-Noether theorem, and applications. The prerequisites for the book are a strong undergraduate algebra course and a working familiarity with basic point-set topology. A course in graduate algebra is helpful but not required. The book includes appendices presenting useful background in complex analytic topology and commutative algebra and provides plentiful examples and exercises that help build intuition and familiarity with algebraic varieties.

Aquaculture

This book presents a solutions based approach to reducing and removing CO2 from the atmosphere transforming it into solid (crystalline) CaCO3 through the ability of marine organisms such as molluscs, crustacea, corals, and coccolithophore algae. The overwhelming advantage of this approach is that it promises enhanced climate mitigation in comparison to planting forests, industrial/engineering carbon capture and storage process. It also provides a sustainable food resource. Furthermore, it would improve the ocean’s biodiversity at the same time as the excess atmospheric CO2 released by our use of fossil fuels is returned to the place it belongs – as a present day fossil, safely out of the atmosphere to the distant future. If the level of finance and global effort that are readily foreseen for forest management and flue gas treatments were applied to expansion of global shellfish cultivation, curative amounts of carbon dioxide could be permanently removed from the atmosphere within a few decades. The concept presented in this book could have a profound influence on the life of the planet.

Differential Equations

This graduate-level introduction to ordinary differential equations combines both qualitative and numerical analysis of solutions, in line with Poincaré’s vision for the field over a century ago. Taking into account the remarkable development of dynamical systems since then, the authors present the core topics that every young mathematician of our time―pure and applied alike―ought to learn. The book features a dynamical perspective that drives the motivating questions, the style of exposition, and the arguments and proof techniques. The text is organized in six cycles. The first cycle deals with the foundational questions of existence and uniqueness of solutions. The second introduces the basic tools, both theoretical and practical, for treating concrete problems.
