The edTPA Assessment for Special Education

This book is designed to assist the Special Education pre-service teacher plan and prepare a successful edTPA portfolio assessment. Creation of this portfolio requires the candidate to plan, implement, and assess a series of three to five lessons designed specifically for one student with a disability. In total, the portfolio amounts to the writing of up to fifty pages of commentary and analysis of their pedagogical skills. The need for pre-service teachers in special education to receive a passing score on the edTPA portfolio assessment has become a requirement for teacher certification and the successful completion of a degree preparation program in the majority of states in the USA. The creation of a successful, high quality edTPA portfolio necessitates the incorporation of teaching and assessment strategies geared towards students with disabilities, or the focus learner in edTPA parlance. This book will provide the Special Education pre-service teacher and edTPA candidate with detailed guidance on the development of a high-quality portfolio. The reader will discover here a wealth of best practices and proven strategies that teacher candidates of special education are sure to find highly beneficial in creating their portfolio.

The Invisible Satirist

The Invisible Satirist offers a fresh new reading of the Satires of Juvenal, rediscovering the poet as a smart and scathing commentator on the cultural and political world of second-century Rome. Breaking away from the focus in recent scholarship on issues of genre, this study situates
Juvenal’s Satires within the context of the politics, oratory, and philosophy of Rome under Trajan and Hadrian. In particular, the book shows how Juvenal offers a distinctively Roman response to the Greek sophists and philosophers of the so-called “Second Sophistic.” Whereas earlier studies argued
for the satirist’s adoption of an ironic persona in his poems, this book stresses the absence of any guiding, coherent first-person voice in his work, emphasizing instead the poems’ plurality of voices and thematic preoccupation with performance and disguise. These sprawling rhetorical texts,
intricately constructed but deliberately lacking any strong personal voice, ultimately communicate a sense of rootlessness and loss of identity-a sense of being invisible-within the cosmopolitan second-century world. The book will appeal to students and scholars of Roman satire, Imperial Roman
culture, and Second Sophistic literature.

Derrida and the Legacy of Psychoanalysis

In Derrida and the Legacy of Psychoanalysis, Paul Earlie offers a detailed account of the importance of psychoanalysis in Derrida’s thought. Based on close readings of texts from the whole of his career, including less well-known and previously unpublished material, the title sheds new light on the crucial role of psychoanalysis in shaping Derrida’s response to a number of key questions. These questions range from the psyche’s relationship to technology to the role of fiction and metaphor in scientific discourse, and from the relationship between memory and the archive to the status of the political in deconstruction.

Focusing on Freud but proposing new readings of texts by Lacan, Torok and Abraham, Laplanche and Pontalis, amongst other seminal figures in contemporary French thought, Earlie argues that Derrida’s writings on psychoanalysis can also provide an important bridge between deconstruction and the recent materialist turn in the humanities. Challenging a still prevalent ‘textualist’ reading of Derrida’s work, he explores the ongoing contribution of deconstruction and psychoanalysis to pressing issues in critical thought today, from the localizing models of the neurosciences and the omnipresence of digital technology to the politics of affect in an age of terror.
