Mexican rebel Pancho Villa lead a revolution helped by an American aviator imprisonned in Mexico.

An idealistic teacher of the deaf (William Hurt) becomes fascinated by a young, deaf-mute woman (Marlee Maitlin) who works as a janitor at his school. Angry and frustrated with the hearing world, she refuses to learn to lip-read – until the teacher comes into her life. Maitlin, who is herself deaf, won the Best Actress award for this role, her debut – the film was nominated for five.
