The tales included in this collection were written at a time when the technological revolution was fast becoming a reality. Man was questioning, searching beyond the boundaries of his immediate present and into the future. The answers he provided must be considered in the light of his time: the technical details of an airship’s steering device in 1839; the creation of a thinking machine in a society yet to envision computers; or the simple description of the ultimate weapon at the beginning of a century in which man has come to know the terror of technological war.
