Adam Dalgliesh takes us through 1970’s England as he solves unusual murders ranging from a nursing student poisoned during a training demonstration, to a homeless man and recently resigned Tory MP whose throats were slashed in a London church to suspicious deaths at a mysterious home for the disabled.
The book covers the main topics of metric space theory that the student of analysis is likely to need. Starting with an overview defining the principal examples of metric spaces in analysis (chapter 1), it turns to the basic theory (chapter 2) covering open and closed sets, convergence, completeness and continuity (including a treatment of continuous linear mappings). There is also a brief dive into general topology, showing how metric spaces fit into a wider theory. The following chapter is devoted to proving the completeness of the classical spaces. The text then embarks on a study of spaces with important special properties. Compact spaces, separable spaces, complete spaces and connected spaces each have a chapter devoted to them. A particular feature of the book is the occasional excursion into analysis. Examples include the Mazur”“Ulam theorem, Picard’s theorem on existence of solutions to ordinary differential equations, and space filling curves.
In this book, the theory, methods and applications of separable optimization are considered. Some general results are presented, techniques of approximating the separable problem by linear programming problem, and dynamic programming are also studied. Convex separable programs subject to inequality/ equality constraint(s) and bounds on variables are also studied and convergent iterative algorithms of polynomial complexity are proposed. As an application, these algorithms are used in the implementation of stochastic quasigradient methods to some separable stochastic programs.

Antiochus III, the king of the Seleucid Empire for four decades, ruled a powerful state for a long time. He fought and won many battles from India to Egypt, and he lost almost as many. Compared with most of the other Hellenistic monarchs of Macedonian-founded kingdoms, Antiochus had a greater variety of units that he could field in his army. He was in a unique position among the other kings because he had access to the traditional infantry-based Greek cultures in Asia Minor as well as the cavalry-dominant cultures of Mesopotamia and Western Asia. Yet, despite these advantages, Antiochus repeatedly came up short on the battlefield and his tactical shortcomings were no more obviously laid bare than at the Battle of Magnesia-ad-Sipylum in 190 BC. There his huge combined army, one of the largest ever fielded by Hellenistic rulers, was soundly thrashed by the smaller Roman force.
