In the Dark is a new four-part drama by Bafta-winning writer Danny Brocklehurst for BBC One, commissioned by Charlotte Moore, Controller BBC One and Polly Hill, Controller BBC Drama Commissioning. Adapted from the books by best-selling novelist Mark Billingham, In the Dark centres around the engaging and complex female detective Helen Weeks, in two separate stories.

Season 1, Episode 1
As DI Helen Weeks grapples apprehensively with pregnancy, she is compelled to return to her loathed rural home town of Polesford, Derbyshire. Two girls have been abducted, and the man arrested is married to Helen’s childhood best friend, Linda. But is he guilty? And why is Helen so desperate to come to Linda’s aid after avoiding Polesford for all these years?

Season 01, Episode 02
Helen and Paul are joined by pathologist friend Phil Hendricks as they become further embroiled in the abduction case. The clock is ticking to find Poppy alive and clear Bates’s name, but to Paul’s vexation, Helen seems increasingly disturbed by being in Polesford.

Season 01, Episode 03
We join a heavily pregnant Helen five months after the Polesford case. Still battling with the fallout from her infidelity, Helen’s life is derailed by a gangland shooting with tragic consequence. Just days from giving birth Helen is plunged into a murder investigation involving Manchester’s criminal underbelly, forcing her to question everything she holds dear.

Season 01, Episode 04
Helen finds herself in more danger as the investigation pulls her further into Manchester’s criminal underworld. Paranoid, vulnerable but unperturbed, she tracks down the gang responsible for the shooting – before the case throws up some shocking revelations. And can Theo cheat death as the gang continues to be hunted by a mystery gunman?
