From Britney Spears delivering a pair of surprise performances, to Beyoncé’s show-stopping number, the BBMAs were full of unforgettable moments. There was plenty of buzzworthy action going on behind-the-scenes, too — and not just during Sunday night’s big show, but over two days of rehearsals at the MGM Grand Arena.

Sail On: The 30th Anniversary Collection 1974-2004 is certainly the most lovingly crafted of the many Kansas retrospectives. Featuring 27 album cuts that range from classic FM hits like “Dust in the Wind” and “Point of No Return” to fan favorites such as “Song for America,” and a 16-track DVD that collects numerous television appearances, videos, and live recordings, Sail On seems to be the definitive tome of the Midwest art rock band’s very existence.

This is black and white footage of a short set recorded for German TV. The John Coltrane quintet includes Eric Dolphy on flute and alto sax, and there are some moments of fierce, broiling improvisation as you’d expect from the same line up that recorded Live at The Village Vanguard. However, the camerawork is irritating – much play is made of the angular, futurist-styled studio set, the director framing each shot so that the musician is part of an abstract composition.

This is an item unique to Japan – a complete concert video! And, while it may look the same as the album Live in Japan, it is not the same concert, although it was filmed during the same concert tour.
The reason it was not released worldwide is that there are Japanese subtitles on the screen throughout the concert. The master tape of the concert without the subtitles apparantly no longer exists, so they had to use this broadcast master as the source video. This is an extremely important document in the history of the Carpenters’ career, so it is well worth seeking out! Pretty good audio for its time – and the video is excellent.

The album name is in reference to a quote by Don Henley after the band’s breakup in 1980; he commented that the band would play together again “when Hell freezes over.” One of the most notable tracks is a new arrangement of “Hotel California” that features an extended acoustic guitar and percussion opening. At the beginning of the concert, Glenn Frey joked to the audience: “For the record, we never broke up; we just took a 14-year vacation.”
The new song “Get Over It” became a modest hit, and another new song, “Love Will Keep Us Alive”, reached #1 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart.
