The story begins as handsome and soulful former soldier, John Beecham, has acquired the house to start a new life for his family and a business as a trader. Wealthy and distinguished, John has witnessed profiteering and exploitation during his time with the controlling East India Company and appears haunted by his past. Determined to escape that life, he sets his sights on becoming an honorable member of the region’s trading community…

But in the glorious setting of Beecham House, John’s life remains shrouded in mystery. His arrival provokes speculation and gossip amongst the servants and despite filling his residence with relatives and friends, Beecham’s house still has dark corners that crackle with conspiracy, disharmony and sinister intent. The story also unfolds at a time when the 1,000-year-old Mughal rule is over and the British vie with the Maharajas to claim India as their own.

Season 01, Episode 01
Period drama, set in 18th century Delhi, years before the territory fell under British colonial rule. John Beecham (Tom Bateman), a former soldier for the East India Company, buys a mansion in the area in the hope of starting a new life. His shadowy past is soon the talk of the household, particularly since he arrives accompanied by a mysterious child of unknown parentage.

Season 01, Episode 02
Reports come through that Daniel is in Kannauj where the East India Company have set up a military base camp. The camp is deemed by many, including General Castillon, to be a direct provocation. John’s brother, Daniel is found in a brothel drowning his sorrows. It’s many years since the brothers have seen each other and it becomes clear that they have a troubled past.

Season 01, Episode 03
John and Samuel find the perfect gift for the Empress, but when their shipment goes missing and Gopal, John’s loyal servant, is murdered John’s future is thrown into jeopardy. He suspects that Castillon is behind the death. Violet agrees to procure more opium for Henrietta in return for help in her quest to win John’s affections.

Season 01, Episode 04
Chandrika visits John’s room late at night fuelling suspicions about their relationship. The clandestine meeting is witnessed by Violet who tells a shocked Henrietta.

Season 01, Episode 05
After revealing a big secret he has been carrying for most of his life to protect one important person, John learns of more bad news from home.

Season 01, Episode 06
John has spent several days and nights in his cell and has finally worked out who betrayed him. Daniel, Margaret and Chandrika desperately try to help release him, but only the Emperor can let him go free – and this will only happen when he is told.
